Pulled Hamstring

Have a Pulled Hamstring? Come in for all the information you need.

What is a Pulled Hamstring and How Can I Tell How Severe it Is?

If you are an athlete or someone who does a lot of work standing on your feet or lifting, having a pulled hamstring is something that will make you cringe because it might mean sitting out from your sport or taking some time off from work. When you have a pulled hamstring, you receive a tear in one or more of the muscles in the hamstring muscle group (Semitendinosus, Biceps Femoris, and Semimembranosus). Receiving a hamstring injury greatly hampers your ability to maneuver the thigh backward at the hip, and flex your knee.

A pulled hamstring is a common injury among hurdle jumpers and sprinters, and other sports that require athletes to run quickly, such as baseball or football. Professionals that work on their feet feet under extreme conditions, such as police officers or firemen, are apt to also get a pulled hamstring.

Pulled Hamstring – Symptoms

If you are not sure if you have a pulled hamstring, there are several symptoms that you can exhibit that will tell you if you have one. If you feel pain when you stretch the muscle, or when contracting it against resistance is a sign that you might have a pulled hamstring. If you feel sharp pains in the back of your leg, especially when doing any kind of high velocity running movements, then you might have a pulled hamstring. You can also have a pulled hamstring if you see any bruising or swelling in the hamstring area or if you are able to feel a large gap in the hamstring.

This injury varies in severity and is measured in grades one, two, and three. A grade one hamstring injury only consists of small tears in the muscle. Grade two injuries are partial tears and a grade three injury is a complete or severe rupture of the hamstring.

Each grade of injury feels different. As you can imagine, having a higher grade injury has a greater probability of feeling more painful. However, pain alone should not be used to judge how bad the injury is.

If you have a grade one hamstring injury, you might feel tightness in your posterior thigh. With a minor grade of injury such as this, you are able to walk, but it probably causes you a little discomfort. There could possibly be a little swelling, and lying down on our stomach and bending the knee against any resistance won’t result in much pain.

A grade two hamstring injury is a lot more noticeable than a grade one. When you try to walk with a grade two hamstring injury, your gait is affected which may cause you to limp. If you are performing some kind of activity, there might be sudden twinges of severe discomfort. Any pressure will probably increase the pain and you will probably notice some swelling of the muscle. With this injury, you probably won’t be able to straighten your knee to its fullest extent.

A grade three hamstring injury greatly impedes your mobility and should be treated by a medical professional as soon as possible. With this kind of hamstring injury your walking is greatly affected, and you might need walking aids, such as crutches, so that you can remain mobile. If you try to flex your knee, you will notice that you are in severe pain. There is almost always visible swelling of this muscle right after this injury is suffered.

A hamstring injury can put a major hamper on your athletic or work activities, but it is not the end of the world! Just make sure to take care of yourself and see a doctor, and you’ll recover from your hamstring injury soon and be back on the field or at work in no time.
